VaroPreem announced Feb. 24 that it is launching Preem Redefine HVO100, a Nordic Swan‑Ecolabeled fuel, in Norway.
The fuel meets the Nordic Swan Ecolabel’s stringent requirements for responsibly sourced, traceable and controlled feedstocks, and mandatory annual documentation of greenhouse‑gas emissions.
It is produced from raw materials such as residues from paper-pulp production and food industries.
It is not produced from palm oil, palm‑based residues or soybean oil.
As a result, the fuel delivers a minimum 90 percent reduction in fossil CO2 emissions compared with fossil diesel.
This is important because while nearly all newly registered passenger cars in Norway are electric vehicles, there are still more than 1 million owned diesel passenger cars and around 700,000 diesel‑powered commercial vehicles in operation in the country.
The product is manufactured at VaroPreem’s manufacturing hub in Gothenburg, Sweden, and will initially be made available through bulk sales directly to commercial customers in the Norwegian market.
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is the official ecolabel of the Nordic region and is awarded only to products and services that meet strict and rigorous environmental standards.
“Norway sets an example in electrification, and over time much of the vehicle fleet will indeed become fully electric,” said Magnus Heimburg, the deputy CEO and executive vice president for markets and customer relations at VaroPreem. “However, the transition will take time, and renewable blend fuels have an important role to play in further reducing Norway’s emissions. By choosing Preem Redefine HVO100, Norwegian drivers, including in the commercial-transport sector, can today transition from fossil to renewable alternatives without changing vehicles.”
Bjørn Olav Strandli, market manager at the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, added, “Norway, the Nordic region and the world are facing an urgent need for transformation at a time when energy supply is under pressure. The Nordic Swan‑labeled renewable diesel from VaroPreem offers an important part of the solution. To secure both sufficient energy and the shift to renewable fuels, we must rely on multiple energy carriers. This is significant news for the transport sector and for other buyers seeking an alternative.”
