Phillips 66 begins renewable diesel production at San Francisco Refinery

Phillips 66 has completed the hydrotreater conversion at its Rodeo, California, petroleum refinery near San Francisco and has begun to produce renewable diesel.

“Earlier this month, we commenced renewable diesel production at the San Francisco Refinery with the completion of the diesel hydrotreater conversion,” said Greg Garland, chairman and CEO, in the company’s first-quarter financial results.

The plan for the petroleum company is to ramp up renewable diesel production to hit 120 million gallons per year (mgy) by third quarter. Following that, subject to permitting and approvals, full conversion of the refinery in order to produce up to 800 mgy is expected by early 2024.

Earlier this month Phillips 66 announced its investment in, and 100 percent soybean oil offtake agreement with, a soy crush project under development in Iowa. Earlier yet in April, Worley announced it had been awarded a front-end engineering and design contract for the so-called Rodeo Renewed full-conversion project.

In its financials, Phillips 66 reported a first-quarter loss of $654 million and an adjusted loss of $509 million from severe winter storms and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
