Eni Rovuma Basin announced Dec. 21 the beginning of vegetable-oil production in Mozambique.

The vegetable oil will be used as feedstock in Eni’s biorefineries.

This initiative, first announced in February 2022, is part of Eni’s strategy to contribute to the decarbonization of transportation, and it will include Mozambique in the value chain of sustainable mobility.

The vegetable oil has been extracted from byproducts from local agro-processing factories certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification-EU scheme, avoiding land-use change while assuring traceability and respect for the environment and human rights.

Eni Rovuma Basin plans to further develop the project in Mozambique, involving thousands of local farmers and developing the industrial platform for production of agricultural feedstock in the country, promoting socioeconomic development in rural areas and regeneration of degraded farmland.

Eni Rovuma Basin said it will support farmers through know-how transfer and the introduction of mechanization and best practices to further develop and strengthening local capabilities.

Eni has been present in Mozambique since 2006.

It is the delegated operator of the Coral South project, which was the first to produce gas in Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin.

In addition to upstream activities in Mozambique, Eni said it is also committed to play a decisive role in the energy-transition process towards a low-carbon future, with the goal of achieving net carbon neutrality by 2030 (scope 1 and 2 emissions).

Mozambique plays an important role in Eni’s decarbonization strategy, thanks to the agricultural-feedstock programs, forestry projects and other carbon-offset initiatives, targeting Eni’s residual emissions while positively impacting local communities in terms of economic and social development.
