One of Royal Wagenborg’s F-class vessels recently completed the company’s first transatlantic voyage sailing on coprocessed marine biofuel, Wagenborg announced May 24.

The shipment, requested by one of Wagenborg’s customers, illustrated the ease to switch to this type of a drop-in biofuel.

The use of coprocessed marine biofuel resulted in a 68 percent reduction in greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions on this specific voyage, according to Wagenborg.

“We consider the recent use of biofuels as a first step in short-term success when it comes to CO2 reduction,” the company stated.

“Significant CO2 reductions can only be achieved when actions are taken in the entire supply chain. That is why we continue to actively discuss the possibility of biofuels with our customers,” Wagenborg continued.

The entire Wagenborg fleet of multipurpose vessels is able to bunker the ISO 8217-compliant coprocessed marine biofuel, since no investment in onboard equipment is required to use the drop-in fuel.

The coprocessed biofuel is produced using ISCC Plus-certified raw materials, such as vegetable oils, used cooking oil or animal fat, which may reduce GHG emissions up to 80 percent over the lifecycle when compared to fossil fuels.

“At Wagenborg, we believe in a sustainable marine future and the use of biofuels fits perfectly in our sustainability strategy,” the company stated.

“By following five consecutive steps, we aim to achieve a 40 percent CO2 reduction by 2030 and even 70 percent by 2050, compared to base year 2008. So far, our fuel-efficiency program and the first use of biofuels resulted in a CO2 reduction of about 26 percent compared to the year 2008.”
