Syzygy Plasmonics signs capacity-reservation agreement with Uniper for planned facilities in Latin America

Uniper has joined a growing list of aviation-fuel buyers that have reserved future production capacity from Syzygy Plasmonics’ NovaSAF™ platform, as commercial momentum behind the company’s biogas-to-SAF technology continues to build, Syzygy Plasmonics announced Oct. 1.
The agreement adds to Uniper’s low-carbon portfolio and brings additional commercial traction to Syzygy’s planned NovaSAF™ facilities in Central and South America, as NovaSAF-1 in Uruguay approaches a final-investment decision (FID).
More importantly, the agreement for Syzygy’s dual-certified pathway helps to enhance the European Union’s ability to meet mandate targets for both bio and renewable fuel of nonbiological origin (RFNBO) SAF.
“Uniper’s decision to reserve NovaSAF™ capacity reflects the commercial traction our platform is attracting at the moment when it is most needed to meet mandate volumes,” said Trevor Best, the CEO of Syzygy Plasmonics. “Agreements like this affirm that the market is moving to meet EU Commission targets and companies like Syzygy have the right product at the right time, with the right volumes.”
Benedikt Messner, Uniper’s senior vice president of new energies, added, “Uniper is committed to building a diversified portfolio of low-carbon energy solutions that support our customers’ decarbonization goals. Securing access to Syzygy’s innovative technology is another important step in building our position in a market with significant growth potential and complements our recent announcements in advancing our sustainable-fuels strategy.”
For Uniper, the agreement represents a deliberate step in building a low-carbon energy portfolio that includes SAF.
As European aviation faces growing demand under ReFuelEU and the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, securing forward supply from biogas-to-SAF pathways positions Uniper to serve customers in an increasingly dynamic market.
NovaSAF™ is Syzygy Plasmonics’ commercial-project platform, converting biogas to SAF using the company’s proprietary Rigel photocatalytic reactor.
Designed for cost-competitive production, NovaSAF™ facilities are planned globally.
NovaSAF-1 in Uruguay is at FID, a milestone that Syzygy Plasmonics said reflects the strength and readiness of the platform.
