Scan Global Logistics announced April 7 that the Swedish medical-device company Mölnlycke is expanding its use of marine biofuel to accelerate the transition to low-carbon logistics.

“We are committed to reducing greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions in alignment with our SBTi targets,” said Jörgen Kåreby, the vice president of global logistics at Mölnlycke. “Ocean biofuel is a key steppingstone to more advanced alternative fuels replacing traditional fossil fuels in marine shipping. We want to help raise the demand for alternative marine fuels to contribute to decarbonizing shipping.”

According to Scan Global Logistics, this renewed commitment highlights the increasing role of alternative marine fuels in supporting businesses with ambitious climate targets.

By expanding the partnership within biofuel, Mölnlycke aims to drive demand for low-carbon shipping solutions and contribute to the broader adoption of alternative fuels in the industry.

With the EU Emissions Trading System shaping market dynamics, the use of biofuel helps Mölnlycke optimize costs, as the increasing EU-driven CO2 taxation on ocean freight makes fossil-fueled transport more expensive.

“Scan Global Logistics has a good understanding of our flows and of the combined impact of EU ETS and insetting of ocean biofuels on specific flows,” Kåreby said. “We also value the transparency in reporting CO2e savings and the process of third-party review certification.”

This reflects a broader industry trend, as companies are not just seeking alternative fuels but also reliable insights, accurate emissions reporting and a clear path to demonstrating climate action to stakeholders, Scan Global Logistics stated.

For Mölnlycke, working with a logistics partner that prioritizes transparency and proactive climate solutions is crucial to making informed decisions.

“The partnership between Scan Global Logistics and Mölnlycke reinforces the importance of collaboration in tackling climate challenges,” Kåreby said. “[Scan Global Logistics’] commitment to transparency in emission tracking allows us to make informed decisions and confidently communicate our sustainability progress to stakeholders, including customers and regulators.”

Marc Bach Spangsberg Sørensen, Scan Global Logistics’ global head of program management, echoed the importance of partnerships as a catalyst for change.

“Collaboration is key to making low-carbon logistics a reality,” he said. “By working closely with Mölnlycke, we take proactive steps to implement real-world strategies that drive down emissions, enhance efficiency and set a benchmark for low-carbon logistics. This partnership proves that reducing supply-chain emissions is not a future goal—it’s happening today.”

As businesses navigate evolving regulations, Scan Global Logistics said partnerships like this prove that concrete actions, such as adopting alternative fuels and ensuring transparent emissions reporting, lead to tangible reductions in supply-chain emissions and long-term business resilience.
