Thailand-based container-shipping line Regional Container Lines Public Co. Ltd. and PTT Oil and Retail Business Public Co. Ltd.’s energy-solutions business signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) June 4 pertaining to a marine biofuel supply agreement.
This marks the first collaboration in Thailand and abroad to develop and promote the use of biofuel in the container-shipping industry, aiming to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions from maritime operations.
RCL said it has been steadfast in building a strong foundation for long-term sustainable growth, placing sustainability as a core pillar of its strategic direction.
The company added that it is committed to growing its business in harmony with environmental preservation and social responsibility.
“In line with our vision for responsible progress, the company approached the initiative to start using biofuel-blended very-low sulfur fuel oil with the goal of transitioning toward cleaner marine fuels—underscoring our strong commitment to environmental stewardship,” RCL stated.
“It represents our commitment to sustainability and protecting marine ecosystems, communities and aquatic life,” the company added.
“This proactive step reflects our dedication to adopting ecofriendly alternatives and contributing to global decarbonization efforts,” RCL stated.
The use of biofuel will significantly reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from RCL’s fleet across all service routes, according to the company.
RCL currently owns and operates a fleet of 45 vessels and operates a network of 94 offices made up of both owned and agency partner offices to support its operations.
