Topsoe, a leading global provider of advanced technology and solutions for the energy transition, announced Feb. 25 that it has signed an agreement with Petrobras, Brazil’s state-owned energy company.
Under this agreement, Topsoe will deliver technology and services for a potential facility at Petrobras’ Boaventura Energy Complex located in Itaboraí, in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
The project will be based on Topsoe’s HydroFlex® technology, proprietary equipment and catalysts to enable the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel.
Once operational, the facility, which is subject to final-investment decision (FID) and regulatory approvals, will be one of the largest SAF plants in Brazil.
It will process 1 million tons of feedstock annually including different types of vegetable oils, waste materials and animal fats.
“We are honored to support Petrobras on this exciting project,” said Yassir Ghiyati, Topsoe’s chief commercial officer. “By combining Petrobras’ strong position in the Brazilian energy sector with Topsoe’s leading HydroFlex® technology, this project could contribute meaningfully to the supply of SAF and renewable diesel in Latin America. It represents an important step toward strengthening fuel diversification in one of the world’s most dynamic energy markets.”
Topsoe noted that this agreement addresses the growing global demand for SAF.
The International Air Transport Association projected that SAF production in 2025 would reach 1.9 million metric tons, nearly double the 1 million tons produced in 2024.
Production is expected to grow to 2.4 million tons in 2026.
With HydroFlex, customers can convert various fats, oils and greases into drop-in renewable jet and diesel that meet all globally accepted specifications for these fuels.
Topsoe’s HydroFlex can be deployed in both grassroots units and revamps for coprocessing or fully renewable applications.
