Petrobras announced Jan. 15 that it has signed an agreement to supply bunker fuel with 24 percent renewable content (B24) to the Norwegian company Odfjell, one of the world’s largest shipping companies in the transport of chemicals and bulk liquids.

Petrobras said this strategic operation reinforces the company’s position in the international low-carbon fuel market and meets the growing demand for more sustainable solutions in the maritime segment .

Petrobras’ B24 is a very-low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) with 24 percent biodiesel and 76 percent mineral oil produced in the company’s refineries.

The product follows international quality standards, holding the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification System’s EU certification, a global system that ensures traceability, compliance with sustainability criteria and the reduction of greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions throughout the biofuel production chain.

ISCC EU is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the European market.

Furthermore, the fuel meets the requirements of FuelEU maritime, an EU regulation that mandates a progressive reduction in the intensity of GHG emissions in fuels used by ships docking in European ports, encouraging the use of renewable and low-carbon solutions.

“The sale of the VLS B24 to a company with a strong international presence demonstrates Petrobras’ consistent progress towards a low-carbon market, in synergy with our 2026-’30 business plan,” said Claudio Schlosser, Petrobras’ director of logistics, commercialization and markets. “This initiative not only generates value for the business but also enables concrete solutions in new energies and decarbonization, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and innovation.”

Fueling will be carried out by dedicated barges from the Rio Grande Terminal (TERIG), where the product will also be blended.

The contract stipulates the delivery of up to 12,000 tons throughout 2026.

Odfjell, a Norwegian company with a presence on routes across the Americas, Europe and Asia, is a leader in the maritime transport of chemicals and liquid bulk cargo.

It has offices in strategic locations, including São Paulo, supporting its activities in South America.

The relationship between Petrobras and Odfjell, marked by a history of collaboration, gained new momentum with the joint initiative of the Brazilian and Norwegian governments to promote sustainable solutions in the energy sector.

This movement resulted in the creation of a green corridor between the two countries, formalized by a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in February 2025, which encourages the circulation of ships powered by low-carbon fuels.
