Petrobras announced in October that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Amazon Brazil to explore collaboration opportunities to advance the development and implementation of low-carbon fuel solutions in logistics activities in Brazil.
The MOU establishes guidelines for identifying opportunities that integrate Petrobras’ energy expertise with Amazon Brazil’s decarbonization commitment.
The transportation sector represents a significant opportunity for carbon reduction through the adoption of more sustainable fuels and improved operational efficiency.
The MOU comes as companies across various sectors accelerate sustainable practices and strengthen commitments to support Brazil’s climate agenda, reducing carbon emissions while fostering economic growth with environmentally responsible operations.
“Petrobras reinforces its commitment to investing in innovative, competitive and affordable decarbonization alternatives,” said Claudio Schlosser, Petrobras’ director of logistics, sales and markets. “The partnership with Amazon seeks to generate significant business opportunities for both companies, advancing the path to decarbonization and generating benefits for society and the environment.”
Amazon co-founded and signed the Climate Pledge, a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across all its operations by 2040.
Decarbonizing its transportation network is critical to achieving this goal.
Through the MOU, Amazon Brazil and Petrobras will evaluate opportunities, including:
Development of low-carbon fuels certified by ISCC Plus or equivalent, with preference for low carbon-intensity residual feedstocks.
Adoption of pilot programs where low-carbon fuels can be integrated into Amazon’s transportation network.
Implementation of market-based mechanisms, such as book-and-claim or mass-balance systems, to make low-carbon fuels more accessible and affordable for small and medium-sized businesses that make up the majority of the logistics sector.
“This MOU represents an important step toward achieving our net-zero carbon emissions by 2040,” said Ricardo Pagani, the operations lead for Amazon Brazil. “Through this agreement, we aim to develop innovative ways to advance our climate goals while evaluating opportunities to help Brazil decarbonize its transportation industry. We believe that investments in low-carbon, waste-based feedstocks can enable farmers and agricultural cooperatives to transform their waste into valuable energy resources, potentially creating jobs in agricultural processing and fuel production. This approach could strengthen Brazil’s energy independence, reinforcing its leadership position in the global bioeconomy.”
As Amazon expands its operations in Brazil, with a DNA built on innovation and operational excellence, the company maintains a constant focus on improving energy efficiency and decarbonizing its transportation network, according to Petrobras.
This corporate approach helps advance environmental goals while ensuring responsible business growth, investing in the future and focusing on the long term.
Diesel R
Petrobras said it conducts research and implements solutions that, in addition to being compatible with market demands, promote a low-carbon future.
In the road-transportation sector, the company is a pioneer in the development of diesel with renewable content in Brazil.
Diesel R, in addition to being more sustainable, meets the most demanding engines and exhaust-gas treatment systems without requiring changes to the supply chain or storage.
“It is a high-quality product, ensuring greater durability and a lower risk of engine failure,” Petrobras stated.
Currently, Petrobras produces and sells Diesel R with 5 percent renewable content through the coprocessing process at the Presidente Getúlio Vargas (Repar) refineries in Paraná, and at Presidente Bernardes (RPBC) in São Paulo.
