Marine biofuel reduces Cargo-Partner’s CO2e emissions by over 800 tons in 1st half of year

Cargo-Partner, a group company of Nippon Express Holdings Inc., announced Aug. 25 that it has reduced CO2e emissions by 811 tons through sustainable marine fuel (SMF) during the first half of 2026.

Cargo-Partner’s SMF program enables customers to reduce emissions associated with their ocean-freight shipments by using Hapag-Lloyd’s “Ship Green” solution.

Between January and June, these reductions were achieved through the use of 259.46 tons of waste- and residue-based biofuel in Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet.

“By offering certified lower-emission transport solutions, we help our customers make measurable progress toward their sustainability targets,” said Erich Schatz, the chief operating officer for overseas at Cargo-Partner. “The results achieved in the first half of 2026 demonstrate the growing demand for practical and credible solutions to reduce emissions in global supply chains.”

Transparent reporting, sourcing

The reports show that Cargo-Partner achieved CO2e reductions of 290.58 tons in the first quarter and 520.42 tons in the second quarter of 2026 through its SMF program, totaling 811 tons for the first half of the year.

This is comparable to the emissions from an average passenger car driving more than 3.2 million kilometers—approximately 80 times around the Earth.

The reductions were calculated on a well-to-wake basis compared with emissions that would have resulted from using standard fossil fuels.

The biofuels were sourced from sustainable supply chains complying with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).

The process is based on the Hapag-Lloyd Ship Green Process Report 2025 and has undergone limited independent assurance in accordance with ISAE 3000 (revised).

Comprehensive sustainability strategy

The initiative forms part of Cargo-Partner’s broader sustainability approach, based on the principles of “measure, optimize, reduce.” Through its shipment, planning, organization and tracking (SPOT) platform, the company provides shipment-level greenhouse-gas emissions data and supports customers in identifying more efficient routes, improving capacity utilization and selecting lower-emission transport options.

In addition to SMF, Cargo-Partner offers further certified insetting solutions, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), rail transport, electric trucks and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), also known as renewable diesel.

The company is also expanding the use of renewable energy at its facilities and strengthening environmental-management standards across its global network.

Cargo-Partner’s sustainability efforts were recognized once again in 2026 with an EcoVadis Silver Medal.

With an overall score of 72 points, the company ranked in the 85th percentile of all businesses assessed by EcoVadis.

The rating reflects Cargo-Partner’s performance across the areas of environment, labor and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement.

The scorecard is valid until March 26, 2027.

Looking ahead, Cargo-Partner said it remains committed to turning sustainability objectives into measurable action and helping customers reduce the environmental impact of their supply chains and their global CO2e footprint.
