Malaysia Airports, Malaysia Aviation Group strengthen collaboration on aviation sustainability

The Malaysia Aviation Group announced in October a strengthening of its collaboration with Malaysia Airports to advance aviation sustainability, recognizing the need for closer alignment between airports and airlines in supporting Malaysia’s transition towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The two organizations jointly hosted Aviation Sustainability Day 2026 at Sama-Sama Hotel at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, bringing together representatives from government agencies, regulators and industry partners to discuss practical approaches to decarbonization.
Discussions included adoption of cleaner energy, circular-economy initiatives and waste reduction, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and more sustainable airport and airline operations.
Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani, the managing director of Malaysia Airports, said the transition would require airports and airlines to align their priorities, infrastructure planning and long-term investments.
“Malaysia Airlines is our national flag carrier and KLIA is its home base,” Ghani said. “Our relationship has always been closely connected through our shared responsibility to grow Malaysia’s aviation connectivity. Sustainability must now become an equally important part of that relationship. Our respective decarbonization journeys cannot progress independently. We must ensure that our investments and operational priorities complement one another so that we can achieve meaningful progress together.”
Malaysia Aviation Group recently became the first airline group in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to achieve certification under the sustainable-procurement module of the International Air Transport Association’s integrated sustainability program, and the first in Malaysia to retire CORSIA-eligible emissions units (EEUs), with 80,100 units retired towards its phase 1 compliance obligations.
“The progress of aviation sustainability reflects the spirit of Malaysia Inc., where government, regulators, airports, airlines and industry partners work together towards shared national objectives,” said Nasaruddin A. Bakar, Malaysia Aviation Group’s president and group CEO. “Through Malaysia Aviation Group’s mid-term sustainability roadmap 2026-’35, the group is translating its net-zero commitment into measurable priorities across its operations and value chain. The next step is to turn these priorities into action through stronger partnerships and coordinated implementation across the aviation ecosystem.”
Malaysia Airports’ net-zero decarbonization journey targets a 45 percent reduction in emissions from direct operations and purchased electricity at KLIA and 30 percent at its other assessed airports by 2030, using 2025 as the baseline.
The airport operator also aims to achieve net-zero emissions from these sources across its airport network by 2040 and across its material wider value-chain activities by 2050.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Aviation Group targets to reduce emissions intensity to 30 percent to 35 percent by 2030 and 40 percent to 45 percent by 2035, reduce building energy intensity by 20 percent and achieving a 55 percent waste-diversion rate by 2030.
Supporting these priorities, Malaysia Aviation Group’s collaboration with Malaysia Airports on SAF, renewable energy, ground electrification and resource efficiency seeks to advance Malaysia’s aviation-decarbonization agenda and strengthen Kuala Lumpur’s competitiveness as a premier regional aviation hub.
The Aviation Sustainability Day 2026 event also provided an opportunity for industry stakeholders to explore closer cooperation in addressing the investment, infrastructure and operational challenges associated with aviation decarbonization.
