HIF Global announced Nov. 27 that Uruguay’s ministry of environment has granted the environmental location feasibility (VAL) for the eFuels facility the company plans to build in Paysandú.
The project involves an investment of over USD$5.3 billion and the creation of more than 300 permanent jobs once operational.
The VAL states that the selected site is environmentally suitable and authorizes the company to submit the environmental prior authorization (AAP) and the environmental-impact assessment (EIA), which will be evaluated under the “high-complexity” procedure.
This process requires a comprehensive assessment of the project by various government agencies, considering environmental, social and cultural aspects.
“This is a key milestone in the environmental-evaluation process and allows us to stay on track with our development timeline,” said Martin Bremermann, CEO of HIF Uruguay.
“HIF Paysandú would be the first commercial eFuels facility in Latin America, a great opportunity for the region and a step that positions Uruguay as a leader in innovation, sustainability and the energy transition,” he added.
In this next phase, the company will move forward with the submission of the required technical documentation.
The resolution establishes that the EIA must include specific evaluations related to water, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, air quality, waste management, noise, vibrations, odors, landscape, soil impact and potential social and cultural impacts.
