German consumption of biodiesel, ethanol fluctuates moderately in 2023

In the first four months of 2023, German consumption of B7 diesel fuel amounted to just over 9.6 million metric tons, which was down just under 7 percent on the previous year’s volume.

Above all, March 2023 outstripped the previous sales quantities in the calendar year.

April 2023 biodiesel consumption declined just less than 5 percent to 209,300 tons on the same month the previous year.

At around 831,000 tons, the consumption of biodiesel in the first four months of the year was just over 2 percent below the previous year’s figure.

Since diesel consumption in the first four months declined more sharply than over the same period a year earlier, the volumetric incorporation rate rose from 7.5 percent the previous year to 7.9 percent, according to investigations conducted by Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (mbH).

April 2023 use of bioethanol including ETBE remained just below the 100,000-ton mark.

Bioethanol and ETBE recorded a rise of 13 percent and 5 percent, respectively, on the previous month.

Nevertheless, the monthly total of 99,400 tons showed a decline of just over 12 percent on the same month the previous year.

At the same time, gasoline consumption increased 4 percent to 1.3 million tons from April 2022.

The percentage of biodiesel contained in blends dropped to 7.1 percent in April 2023, down from 8.2 percent the previous year.

Since more fossil fuel and more biofuel was consumed in the first four months, total consumption reached just over 5.5 million tons.

This translates to a 4 percent rise year-on-year.
