European Energy announced Aug. 20 that it and Mitsui & Co. Ltd., through their joint venture Solar Park Kassø, have signed a multiyear offtake agreement with OMV for renewable eMethanol produced at the Kassø eMethanol facility in Aabenraa, Denmark.

The agreement adds one of Europe’s major integrated energy, fuels and chemicals companies to the growing group of industrial companies sourcing eMethanol from Kassø.

The eMethanol supplied under the agreement will be EU-certified as a renewable fuel of nonbiological origin (RFNBO).

The agreement includes requirements for greenhouse-gas emissions savings significantly above the minimum threshold for RFNBO compliance, demonstrating Kassø’s ability to supply renewable fuels with a substantially lower carbon footprint than their fossil-based alternatives and in compliance with the newly implemented third European renewable energy directive (RED III) for road transport in several European countries.

“We are pleased to welcome another offtaker for our eMethanol produced in Kassø,” said René Alcaraz Frederiksen, the executive vice president and head of Power-to-X at European Energy. “This multiyear commitment demonstrates that there is a real and growing market for renewable methanol as companies strive for compliance with RED III and look for credible ways to reduce emissions from fuels and industrial processes. For Kassø, the agreement is another important commercial validation. We have proven that eMethanol can be produced on an industrial scale. The next step is building a broad and diversified customer base, and adding a company of OMV’s scale and industrial experience is a strong contribution to that development.”

Tadaaki Ito, Mitsui & Co.’s general manager for the methanol and ammonia division, added, “This agreement with OMV marks another important milestone for the Kassø eMethanol project. It demonstrates that eMethanol is evolving into a practical low-carbon solution across a broad range of industries. In addition to marine fuel and chemical applications, demand is now emerging in the transportation fuel sector, reflecting the growing recognition of eMethanol as a viable pathway to decarbonization. We believe eMethanol can provide customers with a realistic and scalable option to reduce emissions while leveraging existing infrastructure and supply chains.”

Martijn van Koten, OMV’s executive vice president of fuels and chemicals, said, “This first commercial application of eMethanol in biofuels in Germany underscores OMV’s commitment to driving the transformation of the mobility sector.”

With the first delivery of eMethanol to OMV completed, the agreement is already being implemented.

This is the fourth publicly announced offtake agreement connected to the Kassø eMethanol facility following agreements with A.P. Moller-Maersk, the LEGO Group and Novo Nordisk, which together demonstrate demand for eMethanol across several industries and applications.

The Kassø eMethanol facility was inaugurated in May 2025 and has an annual production capacity of 42,000 metric tons.

Located next to the 304-megawatt Kassø Solar Park, the facility combines renewable electricity with biogenic CO2 to produce eMethanol.

The facility represents the first commercial-scale eMethanol production of its kind and provides industrial customers with access to a renewable alternative to fossil-based methanol.

Its combination of renewable electricity, biogenic CO2 and industrial-scale production demonstrates how Power-to-X can connect renewable energy production with sectors where direct electrification is difficult.
