Maire announced Feb. 21 that its subsidiary KT-Kinetics Technology has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by the Italian energy company Eni to build a hydrogen-production plant at Eni’s Livorno refinery.

The value of the contract is 123 million euros (USD$133 million).

The project is scheduled for completion in 2026.

The plant to be designed and built by KT will process natural gas and biogenic feedstocks to create hydrogen for the production of biofuels at the Livorno site, where Eni will turn various feedstocks into hydrotreated renewable diesel fuel.

The feedstocks to be converted into hydrotreated biofuel will be considered mainly wastes, according to Maire, such as cooking oils, animal fats and residues from the agribusiness industry.

In addition, the plant is designed so that a unit to capture residual CO2 can be implemented at a later stage.

The construction of the new hydrogen unit is part of Eni’s project to convert its Livorno plant into a biorefinery.

Eni confirmed its decision to convert the Livorno complex into a biorefinery in late January.

“We are proud of this important achievement with Eni,” said Maire CEO Alessandro Bernini.

“Maire confirms once again its role as a provider of innovative technologies and integrated engineering services, contributing to the decarbonization of transport through increasing biofuel production,” Bernini added.
