Air BP pioneers ISCC proof-of-compliance framework

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification System GmbH recently highlighted that Air BP was the first company to apply the ISCC proof-of-compliance (POC) framework to its ISCC EU certification, which facilitates the passing on of sustainability and greenhouse-gas (GHG) savings properties of sustainable fuels to downstream users.

Since its introduction, the POC has been recognized under the EU Emissions Trading System in Germany and Italy, and under the U.K.’s Emissions Trading Scheme.

The framework is particularly relevant for aviation and maritime markets, where airlines and shipping companies need reliable and standardized documentation to report their emissions in accordance with EU ETS.

The POC addresses challenges related to the unavailability of proof-of-sustainability (POS) documents for downstream operators due to allowable upstream claims and ensures that they have access to documentation for sustainability and GHG-emissions savings as required by some ETS schemes.

“Air BP was the first organization to add the ISCC POC trader scope to their ISCC EU certification and is a wonderful example of first movers in the marketplace aligning to the needs of industry and regulators,” said Adam Kirby, ISCC’s senior sustainability manager.

“The POC aids in addressing prior challenges faced in the forwarding of sustainability information, ensuring a more credible and consistent approach,” Kirby said. “By taking this step, Air BP is setting precedent for further integrated sustainability practices across the industry. Developed in alignment with regulatory requirements and built upon existing ISCC systems, the POC framework supplements the ISCC EU scheme and, according to ISCC, provides robust, transparent solutions to support ISCC system users and promote compliance across the market.
