After undergoing a series of quality-standard tests at the laboratories of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional Cilacap Unit and Lemigas in Indonesia, KPI officially carried out the first lifting/shipment of Pertamina sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) products made from a mixture of used cooking oil (UCO).
The successful production of Pertamina SAF from UCO is an important milestone in supporting the roadmap for developing the Indonesian SAF industry, the company noted.
“Today is a moment of pride not only for Pertamina but also for the Indonesian nation,” said Taufik Adityawarman, KPI’s president director. “KPI officially held a ceremony to deliver the first Pertamina SAF product made from used cooking oil.”
This inaugural shipment is part of Pertamina’s SAF flights, which will begin in mid-August using a Pelita Air Services aircraft on the Jakarta-Denpasar route.
Approximately 32,000 liters of Pertamina SAF from the Cilacap refinery are being prepared for the flight.
“This is a significant achievement for KPI in energy transformation and a strategic step in the transition to low-carbon energy in Indonesia,” Taufik explained. “The Cilacap green-refinery project is a strategic step to accelerate the energy transition to renewable energy and contribute to reducing carbon emissions by up to 84 percent compared to fossil aviation fuel. This is certainly in line with the government’s target to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner. Every airline using Pertamina’s SAF will receive the ISCC CORSIA proof of sustainability, which proves that the entire supply chain has met sustainability standards and has been audited by an international institution.”
Furthermore, Taufik said the UCO has been thoroughly tested and then processed at the Cilacap refinery in the treated distillate hydrotreating (TDHT) unit.
The production process utilizes UCO coprocessing technology and a domestically formulated and manufactured catalyst product.
Pertamina SAF products also meet international standards ASTM D1655 and DefStan 91-091.
“This achievement makes Pertamina SAF the first SAF product in Indonesia and a pioneer in Southeast Asia to be ISCC CORSIA-certified,” the company stated.
