Montana Renewables achieves design throughput capacity for biobased diesel production in Great Falls

Refinery assets have been completely separated into a 12,000-barrel-per-day (bpd) crude-oil refinery and 12,000 bpd of renewables. For renewables, this breaks down to approximately 135 million gallons per year (mgy) of renewable diesel capacity, 30 mgy of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) capacity and 15 mgy of renewable naphtha capacity. Calumet Specialty Products Partners LP announced April 18 that its Montana Renewables subsidiary has achieved design throughput capacity at its Great Falls, Montana, facility.

“We are excited to reach this operational milestone,” said Todd Borgmann, CEO of Calumet.

“Montana Renewables started initial renewable fuels production in late 2022 and successfully commissioned its renewable hydrogen plant in March,” he said.

“It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team to see our renewable hydrogen plant de-risked, demonstrating our unique ability to reduce the carbon intensity of our products at increased rates,” Borgmann added.

Calumet Specialty Products Partners manufacturers, formulates and markets a diversified slate of specialty branded products to customers in various consumer-facing and industrial markets.

Calumet is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and operates 12 facilities throughout North America.

Montana Renewables LLC is an unrestricted subsidiary of Calumet located in Great Falls, Montana.

Montana Renewables is permitted for 15,000 barrels per stream day of renewable feedstocks, which are converted into low-emission sustainable alternatives that directly replace fossil-fuel products.

The renewable manufacturing plant began operations in late 2022.

“As the world recognizes a sustainability responsibility, Montana Renewables is poised to make immediate carbon reductions and stands ready to grow and innovate further,” Calumet stated.

“This business is a leader in North America’s energy transition,” the company added.

Montana Renewables’ fuel products are sold and delivered to Canada and the U.S. West Coast.
