City leaders in Hastings, Nebraska, provided an update Oct. 30 on development of the Heartwell Renewables project.
The 80-million-gallon-per-year renewable diesel project was first announced in April 2021 as a joint venture between Cargill and Love’s Travel Stops.
Three years ago, in November 2022, developers broke ground at the project site.
Effective July 31, 2025, Love’s assumed 100 percent ownership of Heartwell Renewables.
Operations are now expected to start in the second half of 2026.
Although Cargill is no longer part owner of the joint venture, the agribusiness remains an integral part of the project as a provider of tallow feedstock.
In addition to tallow, the plant will use multiple feedstocks to manufacture renewable diesel, including waste fats and oils, cover crops and vegetable oils.
Love’s said it plans to create nearly 70 full-time positions for plant operation with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits.
The company said it is committed to leveraging local talent while also attracting high-impact professionals from outside the region to strengthen the team.
Team members are expected to reside in Hastings and surrounding areas to ensure seamless 24/7, year-round operations.
Love’s 100 percent ownership and control of the Heartwell Renewables project “reflects Love’s commitment to new and innovative ways to better serve customers while investing in renewable fuel offerings to provide customers with access to sustainable fueling alternatives.”
