Canadian biofuel groups testify at committee meeting on low-carbon, renewable fuels

Representatives of Canadian biofuel groups such as Renewable Industries Canada (RICanada) and Advanced Biofuels Canada appeared June 21 before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources meeting on the low-carbon and renewable fuels industry in Canada.

Scott Lewis, an executive with the biobased diesel manufacturing company World Energy and RICanada board member, testified on behalf of RICanada on the sustainability of Canada’s biofuels, their proven effectiveness, and the importance of solid government policies in creating demand and attracting investment for renewable fuels across North America. Lewis and others also explained the importance of biofuel blending and innovation to economically achieving Canada’s net-zero targets.

“Today, right here in Ontario, World Energy produces a biodiesel that exceeds net-zero standards, as measured by lifecycle analysis,” Lewis said. “We are able to do this by taking waste, like used cooking oils from restaurants and animal fats from slaughterhouses, and transforming them into fuel. We also have the technology right now to make renewable diesel using other ingredients that would meet net-zero requirements.”

In late December, the government of Canada released its much-anticipated Clean Fuel Standard draft regulations after four years of development. The CFS is set to go into effect Dec. 1, 2022.
