Burns & McDonnell hired as EPC contractor for Montana renewable diesel project

Burns & McDonnell announced Sept. 7 that it is serving as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for Calumet Specialty Products Partners’ refinery conversion project in Great Falls, Montana, to manufacture renewable diesel next year.

Calumet engaged Burns & McDonnell to deliver a range of services including front-end engineering, detailed design engineering, procurement of equipment and materials, and construction.

“This innovative conversion project including renewable hydrogen production will immediately reduce our carbon footprint and has designed-in optionality for future growth and aviation fuel flexibility,” said Bruce Fleming, executive vice president of Calumet’s Montana Renewables project. “We look forward to leading in the energy transition taking place in the Pacific Northwest, while increasing employment in Montana.”

Calumet will be using process technology provided by Haldor Topsoe for the project.

The first phase of the project, according to Calumet, is expected to be complete in spring 2022 to be capable of producing 77 million gallons per year (mgy) of renewable diesel. Phase II involves constructing a renewable hydrogen unit to make the gas necessary to reach more than 150 mgy. The final phase is the development of a feedstock pretreatment unit.
