Velocys, Koch Project Solutions work together on 33 mgy SAF project in Mississippi

U.K.-based Velocys plc has executed a strategic framework agreement with Koch Project Solutions, a subsidiary of Koch Engineered Solutions, for its 33 million gallon per year Bayou Fuels project in Natchez, Mississippi. The project is expected to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from local woody biomass.

Subject to conditions, Koch may be awarded a turnkey EPC contract for the facility, including an integrated performance guarantee wrap backed by a parent company guarantee, according to Velocys.

If an EPC contract between Velocys and Koch is signed, Koch will construct and commission the plant, which Velocys intends to use renewable power with carbon capture and storage.

“The conversion process from gasification of wood chips to [Fischer-Tropsch] synthesis generates a significant volume of biogenic carbon dioxide as a byproduct,” Velocys stated.

“We selected Koch Project Solutions due to their expertise in strategically evaluating and managing complex projects, particularly in the energy infrastructure space,” said Henrik Wareborn, CEO of Velocys. “The project will deliver SAF with a carbon intensity of -144g CO2e/MJ through the combination of biogenic feedstock, renewable power and carbon capture and storage. Such fuels significantly contribute to improved air quality, by reducing particulate emissions by up to 90 percent, lower NOx and 99 percent lower sulfur emissions compared to fossil fuels and standard aviation fuel.”

Wareborn pointed to the Sustainable Skies Act as proof considerable policy support is emerging in the U.S.

Velocys has retained Worley as engineering partner for development of prefeasibility, feasibility and fully integrated technology packages for all its projects, including the planned front-end engineering and design phase for the Mississippi project.
