Ryanair partners with Neste to power flights with 40% SAF blend

Ryanair announced April 20 a partnership with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producer Neste Corp. to power approximately one third of its flights at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport with a 40 percent SAF blend. The use of SAF at Schiphol Airport will support Ryanair’s decarbonization goal of reaching net zero by 2050.

“We are delighted to announce this important agreement with Neste,” said Thomas Fowler, Ryanair’s director of sustainability, speaking at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. “SAF is a cornerstone of our Pathway to Net Zero by 2050 decarbonization strategy and this new blend will power one third of Ryanair’s flights at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We look forward to growing our partnership with Neste as we work towards our goal of operating 12.5 percent of Ryanair flights with SAF by 2030.”

Jonathan Wood, a Neste’s vice president of renewable aviation in Europe, added, “We are thrilled to support Ryanair’s work towards its decarbonization goals by providing our Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel. The SAF is a key element for achieving aviation emission reduction targets. The aviation sector is now at a tipping point with increasing demand and policy proposals are on the table in the EU and U.K. to boost supply and demand for SAF. Neste is leading the transition to SAF and is investing to increase SAF’s global production capacity to 1.5 million metric tons per year in 2023. It is good to see Ryanair being the first short-haul carrier to receive our SAF at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and we look forward to starting our joint journey towards a more sustainable future.”

In addition to its arrangement with Neste, Ryanair is partnering with Trinity College Dublin to open Ryanair Sustainable Aviation Research Center and is investing $22 billion in its “Gamechanger” fleet, which offers 4 percent more seats, 16 percent more fuel efficiency and 40 percent less noise.
