Calumet to use Haldor Topsoe technology for Great Falls renewable diesel project

Calumet Specialty Products Partners LP will be using Haldor Topsoe’s HydroFlex™ technology for its hydrocracker conversion project in Great Falls, Montana, to manufacture renewable diesel.

The first phase of the project, according to Calumet, is to be capable of producing approximately 77 million gallons per year (mgy) of renewable diesel by next spring. The second phase involves constructing a renewable hydrogen unit to generate the gas needed to reach more than 150 mgy. The final phase is the development of a feedstock pretreatment unit.

“This growth project and our vision to source feedstocks locally will create value for the city of Great Falls, Calumet, the state of Montana, and North American low carbon fuel markets,” said Bruce Fleming, executive vice president at Calumet.

Calumet received its first batch of canola oil feedstock Aug. 19, which the refinery will use for testing.
