BP to produce renewable diesel, SAF with Ecofining™ technology at idled Australian refinery

Honeywell has signed a licensing agreement with BP for Honeywell UOP’s Ecofining™ technology at BP’s proposed renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in Western Australia. The oil company plans to convert hydroprocessing equipment at its former refinery site in Kwinana, Australia, to produce 420,000 gallons a day of renewable diesel and SAF, integrating with its existing terminal operations. BP is currently undergoing pre-FEED (front-end engineering design) work.

“BP is excited to be progressing this project as part of its ambition to develop an integrated energy hub at the Kwinana site,” said Justin Nash, a BP senior manager. “BP has strong track record as an energy provider to Western Australia, and this diesel and SAF project will leverage existing infrastructure, including former refining assets, storage and distribution facilities and a team with extensive operational capabilities and experience.”

In 2020, BP announced it was ceasing refining operations at its Kwinana site and converting it into a fuel-import terminal.
